our story

It’s Saturday, December 21st, 2019 and Liam is at his friend Lisa’s apartment experiencing Small Cheval for the first time, drinking a bottle of wine, and shit talking dating and relationships. Both of them were recently single, and they were talking about how much dating sucked.

Cut to several hours and multiple drinks later, and Liam is at his brother Redmond’s annual Christmas party talking with a pal named Mike in the kitchen, when Redmond’s girlfriend, Kendal comes over with Lauren. “Liam, this is Lauren. Lauren, this is Red’s brother, Liam. I can’t believe you two have never met”. After Lauren got over the initial shock of learning Redmond has a brother, she and Liam spent the rest of the night talking. Whatever the conversations were about has been forever lost to time, but rest assured Liam was absolutely flirting hard and trying (successfully) to make Lauren laugh. By the end of the night, after Liam had swept Lauren off her feet with dad jokes and puns, and after promising her that he wasn’t a Trump supporter, they exchanged numbers.

In the following weeks, Liam and Lauren texted almost every day and saw each other almost every weekend, usually at a local dive bar. Fun fact! The second time they hung out, they spent the whole night talking about how neither of them wanted to be in a serious relationship and then agreed to keep things casual. That obviously didn’t last long, and by March 7th, 2020 they confessed their feelings to each other at yet another dive bar. Excited and ready to show off their new relationship to friends, the entire world promptly shut down 6 days later due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Liam and Lauren fell in love through a series of Zoom dates, walks, picnics, and outdoor dining. Lauren adopted her three-legged shadow, Debra, in 2021 and by the end of that year they had officially moved in together. Two years later, in May 2023, Liam convinced Lauren to wake up early for the Lincoln Park Farmer’s Market (thankfully Lauren was in her “cooperative era”) and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and from that moment on they have been celebrating with all their loved ones and have been looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together.

Liam’s Version

It was December 21st 2019. Liam’s older brother, Redmond, was hosting his annual holiday party at his apartment in Logan Square, so Liam obviously thought “I will prepare for this occasion by drinking an entire bottle of wine with my good friend Lisa before I arrive.” What could go wrong? Meanwhile, Lauren is rotting on her couch thinking “I should probably go to my good pal Redmond’s holiday party tonight since I’ve missed it for literally the last 4 years.” She found her ugliest sweater and reluctantly ventured off to the party… ALONE. None of the girls were available that night so it would be a night out with the boys—Mike, Jim, Kevin, Kevin, Brendan and Jacko. What could go wrong?

Approximately 6-8 White Claws later, Lauren spots literally the cutest, gingeriest, bearded man she’s ever seen sitting at the island in the kitchen. “Has he been here this whole time?” she thinks. “Who is that?” she asks the boys repeatedly. “WHO? WHAT? WHERE?” Men are useless. Kendal will know. “Hey Kendal um who is that guy over there? The tall red head?” “THAT’S LIAM, RED’S BROTHER LIAM. YOU KNOW LIAM RIGHT? HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW LIAM?” Kendal shouts loudly across the kitchen while actively pulling Lauren across the room towards him.”

“Hi, I’m Liam.”
“You’re Red’s brother? I didn’t even know he had a brother?”
“Yeah! I’ve known him my whole life!
“Do you have a girlfriend?” (the White Claws ask)
“No!”
Did you vote for Donald Trump?”
“No!”

…and the rest is history.

Cut to March 7th 2020. Lauren and Liam have been spending lots of time together, despite their best efforts to keep things casual after both recently getting out of long-term relationships. Lauren and Liam headed to one of Lauren’s favorite bars in Lakeview, Matildas, after doing some karaoke with Lauren’s friends at the iconic and world-famous, Trader Todds. Thanks again to White Claws, Lauren (in a very cool and casual way) blurts out “WHAT ARE WE DOING DO YOU EVEN LIKE ME BECAUSE I LIKE YOU NOW EVEN THOUGH I DIDN’T THINK I DID BUT I DEFINITELY DO SO YOU SHOULD JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU’RE THINKING BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW AND I AM BAD AT HIDING FEELINGSDKFJGLKDFS”

He stares in disbelief “I’m all in.”

Like all classic romcoms and romance novels, days after making their relationship official the world shut down from a lil something called Covid-19. Liam and Lauren began their relationship and fell in love in the era of Zoom dates, masking, Tiger King, and bread making. They wouldn’t enjoy a date at a restaurant for about a year. Before they knew it, they adopted a Little Debbie and eventually moved in together. Liam pulled off the proposal of the century, despite Lauren’s…challenges...with surprises. Although the world around them sometimes felt like it was ending, they knew theirs was just beginning.
